The Parliament has scheduled Supreme Court judge Abdul Ghani Mohamed’s impeachment for tomorrow.

Speaker of the Parliament announced the news in his opening remarks for today’s Parliamentary session. The Judicial Service Commission had recommended Judge Ghani’s removal over disciplinary and ethics cases that are currently under investigation.

“God willing, the removal of a Supreme Court judge recommended by the JSC will be announced in tomorrow’s parliamentary session,” said Speaker Nasheed.

Judge Ghani is currently under a suspension of 60 days imposed by the JSC. The JSC investigation is also looking into unconstitutional rulings made by the Supreme Court. While the JSC is investigating three cases against Judge Ghani, the Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating a case against Judge Ghani stemming from an act of corruption carried out in 2012.

Judge Ghani’s impeachment comes shortly after the impeachment of Supreme Court judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla and Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi. The Chief Justice was removed from his post on November 18. Judge Abdulla Didi was also removed from the Supreme Court on August 28.

The Supreme Court is currently run by Judge Dr. Esmeralda Zahir after the retirement of Judge Abdulla Areef who is also under investigation.
