Fisheries forum to hold discussions on sustainable fishing

The fisheries forum held every year to celebrate National Fishermen’s Day has commenced today.

The event held in Brightway International School in Hulhumale’ was opened by Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed. National Fishermen’s Day is celebrated on December 10.  

The forum will conclude tomorrow and will provide members of the industry with related information and how to shape policies regarding the industry in order to develop and advance the sector even further, according to the Ministry.

The forum is taken part by fishermen from 15 atolls across the country as well as companies involved in the sector.

Minister Zaha said that discussions to cap the number of fish caught in the Indian Ocean for sustainability purposes will be held at the forum, during her opening remarks. The discussions will also revolve around statistical analysis of the industry, laws, and regulations relating to the industry of the country.
