Internet access needs to be made into an essential service, says Information and Technology Minister, Maleeh Jamaal. The Minister stated that the government should have a huge share in such a move.

The Minister was speaking in the Parliament’s Committee on National Development and Heritage when he made the remark.

“Because it is an essential service, the system for private companies that currently exists needs to be changed somewhat, to allow companies such as STELCO and Water company (MWSC) to provide the service with an adequate government share and broaden the service is an important task in my view.” Says Minister Maleeh.

He added that the parliament and the government should work together to make internet access an essential service. Saying that internet connectivity needs to be broadened to the whole country, Minister Maleeh appealed to the parliament to begin work on necessary amendments to be brought to the law.

Minister Maleeh also pledged that the government would fight to increase competition within the internet service providers. When MPs enquired about the timeline for this work, Minister Maleeh stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted the efforts that had already begun.

“We have had to move on forward with COVID-19 since the beginning of the year, as you are aware. The government’s priority is on the work to assist the public to overcome the situation.” Says Minister Maleeh.

Minister Maleeh also stated that a timeline for reducing internet prices have also been formed and was being followed.

It is a recurring public concern that the internet prices of the country are extremely high. The concern is also extended to connectivity and speed as well. The lack of competition in the industry has also led to a massive outcry from the public. However, major companies in the industry have rolled out convenient packages and easements to customers in light of the difficult situation with COVID-19 being experienced in the country.
