Local government authorities, on Thursday, found two dozen sacks filled with illegally mined sand from the beaches of Fuvahmulah City.

Fuvahmulah City Council announced on Thursday afternoon that the discovery of the 24 sacks of sand was reported to the council by a landowner in Hoadhadu district who found the sacks on his property.

The sacks have since been emptied out to the beach.

Fuvahmulah City Council has warned that removing sand from the coastal area is prohibited.

“It is prohibited to remove sand and other resources from any of the beaches in Fuvahmulah in order to protect the island from coastal erosion,” said the council in an announcement it posted on its official Facebook account.

Incidents of illegal sand mining can be reported to the council via its hotline 1618.
