Huraa land reclamation project doubles the island’s size

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), on Sunday, announced the completion of a land reclamation and coastal protection project in K. Huraa.

MTCC completed the land reclamation and coastal protection project on March 25, and demobilized on June 7.

The project in Huraa aims at solving shortage of living space and land to begin new business ventures at the island.

The project was awarded to MTCC on July 25, 2018, and was carried out in two phases. The first phase is valued at MVR 33.73 million and second phase is valued at MVT 71.32 million. Huraa hosts a population of some 1,163 people. And the project saw the reclamation of an additional 23 hectares to the island’s 25.1 hectors, increasing the size of the island to 48.1 hectors.

In addition to the reclamation of 23 hectares of land, the project also involved the construction of a 1,626 meter revetment, the construction of a 152 meter breakwater and the construction of 150 meter groynes.

Overall, the project is valued at MVR 105.05 million.
