New charges brought against former President Abdulla Yameen is a baseless and politically motivated accusation, opposition coalition parties have declared.

A statement by PPM/PNC read that the two new charges against Yameen in Criminal Court were completely baseless. The charges were brought against Yameen in connection with the MMPRC scandal.

The opposition said that the target of the government was to distract from “its failures” in mitigating the damaged economy and maintaining the peace in the society. PPM/PNC also said that the target of the government with these charges was to distract from the fact that the government could not answer to the public.

Former President Yameen’s conviction in the Criminal Court was rife with political motivations and the opposition parties also said that Yameen was being imprisoned unjustly.

The conviction of Yameen is currently on appeal at the High Court. The opposition also requested a meeting with the senior judge of the High Court Shujau Usmaan regarding the prolonged case.
