MIRA recuperates MVR 2M by freezing bank accounts

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has said that as part of the efforts to recover state assets, it had obtained MVR 2 million by freezing various accounts.

The first quarter report for 2020 publicized by MIRA, read that it had obtained MVR 169.3 million from unpaid payments. 

Various policies employed by MIRA such as freezing bank accounts had obtained MVR 2 million, while Dunning policies had seen MIRA obtain MVR 61.1 million. Reminder calls and emails had also seen MIRA obtain a further MVR 71.2 million.

Legal action taken by MIRA had also obtained MVR 6,000. Installment tax arrangements were made for 52 individuals during this period by MIRA. Meanwhile, 140 were provided notices to pay taxes worth MVR 114.6 million.

Statistics published by MIRA show that 31,738 had registered to pay income tax in the first quarter. A total of 2,086 had registered for TGST as well as a further 12,342 had signed up for General GST. MIRA said that 1,168 had also signed up for Green tax while 45 registered for Airport Service Charge.
