Qunoot-e-Nazilah to be recited after prayers in Male’ mosques

Islamic Ministry has instructed for Qunoot-e-Nazilah to be recited after prayers in mosques in the greater Male’ region.

Qunoot-e-Nazilah is recited to beseech Allah for mercy and benevolence in times of extreme distress or calamity.

The Islamic Ministry had instructed for Qunoot-e-Nazilah to be recited in mosques following daily prayers across Maldives starting January 30, but the practice had stopped in the greater Male’ region when congregational prayers in mosques were suspended with the coronavirus outbreak, and had never resumed when the suspension was lifted in July.

A spokesperson from Islamic Ministry told Sun that mosques in the greater Male’ region resumed recitation of Qunoot-e-Nazilah starting Madhrib prayer on Monday.

The decision comes as the greater Male’ region – the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Maldives – faces a surge in coronavirus cases with the relaxation of the lockdown.

Maldives now has 4,293 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 129 new cases recorded on Monday. 2,670 patients have since recovered, while 19 have died from complications.

Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) has announced the implementation of additional restrictive measures in the greater Male’ region in light of the surge, including a ban on non-essential travel from Male’ to other residential islands, and a 10:00 pm to 05:00 am curfew.

Meanwhile, masks are have been declared mandatory when out in public in all residential islands with confirmed coronavirus cases, and highly recommended in all residential islands, even those which have no confirmed cases.
