An emergency issue submitted to the Parliament by MP for Maduvvari Adam Shareef, calling for the free-of-charge provision of staple food items to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic situation has been rejected.

MP Shareef, while presenting the issue, noted that the income and earnings of the pubic had taken a massive hit due to COVID-19 which had in turn resulted in the fall of the standard of living.

He called for the provision of staple goods such as rice and flour until the situation with the virus was under control. The issue was thrown out with the opposing vote of 24 MPs while only seven voted for it.

Authorities have warned that a full lockdown may once again be on the horizon as COVID-19 case numbers keep increasing day by day.
