Speaker Nasheed departs to UK on unofficial visit

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has departed to the United Kingdom on an unofficial trip today. 

Nasheed’s party MDP said that the Speaker departed in the morning, but did not disclose the reason for Nasheed’s trip. A date for the return of the Speaker was also not disclosed by the party. 

Speaker Nasheed’s last trip abroad was in February when he traveled to India. His departure today, comes during ongoing parliamentary sessions that are set to continue on Monday. 

The second term of Parliamentary proceedings are still underway. Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla had announced in the last sitting that a session was scheduled for Monday. 

According to Parliament regulations, the current term is set to end by August and after a one-month recess, the parliament will reconvene in October.

Speaker Nasheed’s wife and children reside in the United Kingdom. He has visited them on previous occasions as well.
