Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent greetings on occasion of World Tourism Day, commending those working in the Maldivian tourism sector for their contribution to making the sector both resilient and successful.

In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, President Solih conveyed his best wishes to the people and organizations working in the local tourism sector.

“On #WorldTourismDay, my best wishes to all individuals and organizations working in Maldivian tourism for making our tourism sector the resilient success it is,” he said.

President Solih also welcomed all potential visitors to Maldives, as the country recovers from the economic challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“As Maldives recovers from the challenges of COVID19, a very warm welcome to all potential visitors to our sunny shores,” he said.

Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has also expressed his appreciation for all employees working in the tourism sector.

He also expressed appreciation for the support of additional stakeholders.

Maldives opened its shores for tourists in the 1970s, and since then, has become one of the most sought after holiday destinations.

The COVID-19 pandemic presents the greatest challenge for the Maldivian tourism sector – the country’s main economic driver. The country was forced to close its borders amid an escalation in the pandemic in March 27, and reopened its borders more than three months later on July 15.

Maldives is currently open for all tourists, provided they have proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken maximum 72 hours before departure from their original destination.
