High Court convicts husband accused of wife's murder, martial rape

The husband of Ziyaadha Naeem who passed away in 2018, has been convicted of her death. 

Ziyaaadha Naeem from Thank, G. Dh. Thinadhoo passed away at IGMH on December 28, 2015 while she was receiving treatment for injuries received. 

Police had alleged that she died from sexual abuse and injuries of domestic violence inflicted by her husband Ibrahim Shah, also from G. Dh. Thinadhoo.

Four charges were brought against Shaah from Javaahirumaage, G. Dh. Thinadhoo. They include charges related to negligent manslaughter, marital rape,pg and possession of pornographic material. 

Criminal Court judge Ibrahim Ali had ruled that Shaah was not guilty of the charges during a trial on March 21. The Prosecutor General’s Office appealed in the case to the High Court.

The High Court today, found Shaah guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison. 

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem tweeted that the High Court ruling was a massive victory. The case would also set a precedent for marital rape cases. PG Shameem said that two other charges against Shaah would also be proved and that he would hopefully be jailed. 

Police allege that Shaah attacked Ziyaadha while they were living separately. Ziyaadha consulted with the Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo on two occasions before her death. She also consulted with a clinic in Male’ before passing away at IGMH.
