Opposition coalition members have stated that those involved in the massive MMPRC scandal are making “deals” with the prosecution to deliberately expose former President Abdulla Yameen to even further injustice.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison in December 2019, after being found guilty of money laundering regarding the funds obtained from the scandal. The opposition had dubbed the trial of Yameen as a politically motivated sham.

Those involved in the scandal including former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath have both come to terms with the prosecution over a plea deal.

Under the agreement, Adeeb faces a sentence of 20 years in prison while Ziyath faces 11.

Hearings of two cases against Yameen is scheduled for 14:00 today and MP for Maduvvari, deputy leader of PNC, Adam Shareef Umar said that the deals by those involved in the scandal were to further harm Yameen.

“They are not trying to recover the money lost. What happened to the late Nasir and the late Ameen Didi, cannot be repeated towards President Yameen.
