A man has been placed under house arrest for failure to pay millions owed to supermarket chain Redwave in a dispute over land and property lease.

Ahmed Sabig, Hirudhumaage, S. Hithadhoo was ordered pay MVR 21,282,000 to Redwave by the Civil Court back in 2017.

However, he failed to make the payment in accordance with the ruling, prompting Redwave to file a motion with the court.

In a ruling on December 30, 2020, the Civil Court said it found the statements by the two parties sufficient in proving the payment has not been made, and ordered for Sabig to be placed under house arrest for one month under the regulation on unsecured debt transactions, given it’s the first time for action to be taken against him in the matter.

The Civil Court also ordered Sabig to honor the 2017 ruling.

The ruling was issued in absentia.
