MPL accident: Condition of injured laborer remains critical

A laborer from Mina Investment who sustained injuries after getting trapped under a falling turf carpet roll in the Male’ Commercial Harbor remains in critical condition.

The accident took place on the night of February 4, as laborers attempted to load turf rolls on to a boat using a crane.

One of the turf rolls fell on top of one of the laborers - a 28-year-old male.

Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) spokesperson told Sun on Saturday that the condition of the patient remains critical.

He is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, and requires multiple surgeries.

The case is under investigation by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s Accident and Investigation Committee. Mina Investment’s clearance group and MPL workers involved in the operation in question have been placed under suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.

MPL has stated they are investigating the case as a serious issue and will take action against those responsible.

They also said they are working on revising rules and regulations in order to strengthen safety at the Male’ Commercial Harbor.

The latest accident at the Male’ Commercial Harbor comes after Abdulla Asim, 27, (Feyrugasdhoshuge, N. Landhoo) – a MPL worker - died from injuries he sustained after getting trapped under a fallen glass pallet in January.
