The family of former President Abdulla Yameen has made an official request to move him under house arrest.

The family made the request at the Home Ministry. Officials of the Home Ministry confirmed that the Ministry had received such a request but that the Ministry had not yet made a decision on the request.

Yameen is undergoing a five-year prison sentence after being convicted of money laundering related to the MMPRC scandal. His conviction was also upheld by the High Court as well.

Opposition political parties have described Yameen's conviction as a politically motivated one.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has recently stated that Yameen was in prison because he had no medical documents requesting to transfer him to house arrest.
