COVID-19: Gan, Fonadhoo placed under monitoring

Two islands in L. Atoll – Gan and Fonadhoo – have been placed under monitoring.

The restrictions on Gan and Fonadhoo comes with Manadhoo – an industrial island in L. Atoll – also under monitoring.

Gan, Fonadhoo and Manadhoo are linked. And the decision to place Gan and Fonadhoo under monitoring follows confirmation of COVID-19 cases from the area.

With the decision, travel in and out of Gan and Fonadhoo has been temporarily suspended as health authorities conduct contact tracing and test contacts.

Gan Council has announced the island has confirmed three cases.

Maldives has 27,403 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 319 new cases on Friday. 24,116 people have since recovered, while 71 have died from complications. The country currently has 3,207 active cases.

The country is experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases in residential islands outside of the greater Male’ region. Of the 319 new cases on Friday, 182 cases were from residential islands outside the capital.
