77-year-old dies in Laamu, increasing COVID-19 fatalities to 189

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Tuesday that a COVID-19 patient at Laamu Atoll Covid Management Facility has passed away.

The deceased was identified by HPA as a 77-year-old Maldivian male.

He passed away at 09:13 am.

“This is the 189th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks. While infection rates have been significantly reduced with the implementation of new restrictive measures, fatalities continue to be high.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has seen 27 deaths.

Maldives has 68,502 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 552 new cases recorded on Tuesday. 49,844 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 18,462 active cases. 164 of the patients are hospitalized.
