Police officers dismissed for beating up young man in Naifaru

Maldives Police Service states three police officers have been dismissed for beating up a young man in Lh. Naifaru.

The incident came to light last May, prompting an internal investigation by the police.

Police said on Tuesday that the Disciplinary Board, following the conclusion of the investigation by Police Professional Standards Command, decided on June 22 to dismiss three officers and demote two more in response to the case.

The police officers penalized have the right to appeal the decision within seven working days.

The young man was reportedly beaten up for sexually harassing the spouse one on of the officers involved in the streets – an allegation the young man denies.

The young man was in his home when the officers – who were in uniform - dragged him to the waste disposal area in Naifaru and assaulted him.
