Speaker of the Parliament, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Leader has called on the opposition coalition comprising of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) to take a good look at what is happening to the Maldives at present.

In an interview given to the Indian news outlet, DNA, Nasheed highlighted that the country is facing a lot of huge issues right now and confirmed that his willingness to work with PPM was in all seriousness.

“PPM has won the election once and they did it with the votes of religious extremists. MDP won twice and we won with the votes of religious extremists too,” he said.

Nasheed further explained letting things remain this way is letting extremism creep into the country – and religious extremism is something that is unacceptable to both PPM and MDP. Hence, this is the reason why he wishes to form a coalition with PPM.

“But, that does not necessarily mean I am willing to work with just anyone from PPM. I am suggesting that I am willing to work with those who are willing to come to a singular understanding on where we want our country to go,” Nasheed added.

He also noted that he does not wish for Maldives to become another Afghanistan and also stated that he does not want to see our county fail.

Nasheed has recently been extremely vocal about the differences in political ideologies between himself President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih – highly criticizing President Solih’s governance and policies.

He has also expressed his willingness to form a coalition with the main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and their leader, former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
