Applications open for 46 scholarships in mental health

Higher Education Ministry has opened applications for scholarships in mental health and learning disabilities. 

The intention of offering scholarships for master’s degrees in the field of mental health was announced by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the launch of the national skill development masterplan back in August. 

Applications for 46 fully funded scholarships in mental health and learning disabilities was opened by Higher Education Ministry last Monday. 

Higher Education Ministry states that students awarded the scholarships will be bonded to work for institutions allocated for the scholarships once they complete their courses. 

Students awarded five scholarships in Masters in Addiction Studies will be required to work at the Health Ministry. 

Students awarded eight scholarships in Masters in Learning Disabilities will be required to work at Education Ministry, while students awarded two scholarships in Masters in Psychiatry will be required to work at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). 

Meanwhile, students awarded scholarships in Masters in Nursing (Psychiatric Nursing/Mental Health Nursing), Masters in Clinical Psychology, and Masters in Counselling/Psychotherapy will be required to work at Gender Ministry, Health Ministry, and IGMH. 

In order to qualify for the scholarships, students must have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or be qualified to participate in a Master’s Degree-standard course in accordance with the Maldives National Qualification Framework (MNQF). 

Students must also meet the criteria set by the university they are applying to, and the courses they apply for must be endorsed by MNQF. 

Students will be nominated for the scholarships based on a points system. 

Nominated students approved by the universities they applied to will be required to begin their studies within six months of their acceptance. 

Higher Education Ministry has published a list of countries where students can complete their courses. 

Higher Edcuation Ministry has instructed those with further inquiries to check the ministry’s website or call 3026950.
