The Parliament, on Monday, granted approval for Maldives to join International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The request by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeking parliamentary approval for Maldives to join IUCN was reviewed by Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The committee, following its review, decided in favor of granting approval.

The committee’s report was passed by the Parliament with the unanimous vote of 28 parliamentarians who took part in the voting this Monday.

IUCN is a membership Union in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resorts composed of government and civil society organizations.

The organization has 91 member countries, and more than 1,400 member organizations from 170 different countries.

Established in 1948, IUCN has observer and consultative status at the United Nations and plays a role in the implementation of several international conventions on nature conservation and biodiversity.

IUCN is considered one of the most influential conservation organizations and, together with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), is seen as a driving force behind the rise of the influence of environmental organizations at the UN and around the world.
