Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Parliamentary representative of West Henveyru Hassan Latheef stated that the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom need to be arrested for the #IndiaOut campaign by the opposition.

He made these remarks during a campaign gathering held for the party's candidate in the upcoming Komandoo seat by-elections Mohamed Rashid in Sh.Foakaidhoo.

MP Latheef noted that India has been a country that always provided assistance to Maldives, and added that numerous Maldivian families reside in India.

Moreover, he said that teachers and other workers of Indian nationality were being targeted in a way that creates fear among them, and that this was dangerous. He added that it was the former President that should take responsibility for this.

"(Former) President Yameen has to take responsibility for this. While we are already in a very delicate situation, this is throwing us into an even deeper hole."

Additionally, MP Latheef said that it was hard to predict the outcomes of this campaign, and if Yameen cared even the slightest about the people of the country, he would hesitate in moving forward with this.

"We need to look into the hidden parts of this. There has to be a hidden agenda behind why someone who was President 'yesterday' is now coming out with a campaign calling 'IndiaOut'."

With the Komandoo by-election fast approaching, the heat between parties has been escalating, with strong verbal exchanges going back and forth.

Officials from the ruling and opposition parties are currently in the region for various campaign activities.
