US commits additional USD 3.2 million to Maldives

The Unites States committed an additional USD 3.2 million to Maldives on Wednesday, with the signing of the seventh amendment to the Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG) between Maldives and the US.

The amendment to the DOAG was signed by Maldivian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and USAID Mission Director Reed Aeschliman.

The DOAG is a development cooperation agreement signed between Maldives and the US signed on March 12, 2019.

To date, six amendments have been brought to the agreement, bringing the total contribution from the US to USD 22.2 million.

Through the seventh amendment signed on Wednesday, the US committed an additional USD 3.2 million to Maldives, to strengthen capacity to adapt to climate change, implement economic and democratic reforms and build a robust civil society.

After the signing of the amendment, Khaleel and Aeschliman engaged in discussions regarding the ongoing projects in Maldives run with USAID funding and reflected on the enhanced partnership between Maldives and USAID in recent years.

Khaleel also expressed appreciation to the US government and USAID for the development assistance programs under the USAID’s portfolio in Maldives, especially in promoting climate change adaptation, strengthening economic and democratic governance and promoting sustainable economic growth.

The signing of the seventh amendment of the DOAG was witnessed by senior officials from the Foreign Ministry and the USAID Mission.
