COVID 19: 312 new cases from the Maldives past two weeks

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Monday, announced 312 additional cases of COVID-19 over the past two-week period, increasing the number of confirmed cases in Maldives to 179,483.

Maldives had lifted the state on national public health emergency declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 13. Following the revocation of the state of public health emergency, Maldives scrapped many of the restrictions imposed to control the pandemic, including the mask mandate and PCR testing for travelers.

In light of these decisions, HPA stopped publicizing daily updates on the COVID-19 situation.

The agency released developments over the past two-week period – from April 24 to May 7 – this afternoon.

According to HPA, the 312 new cases recorded over the last two weeks include; 43 cases from the greater Male’ region, 222 cases from residential islands outside Male’ and 47 cases from other categories.

No COVID-19 death was recorded during the period. Therefore, the death toll remained the same as before; 289.

With the new developments – the positivity rate in Male’ area is at three percent. Meanwhile, the positivity rate at inhabited islands outside of Male’ area is at seven percent.

As per the statistics released for the one-week period of April 17 to April 23 on April 25 – the positivity rate in Male’ area stood at zero percent whilst positivity rate at inhabited islands outside of Male’ area stood at 38 percent.

Therewith, also positivity rate in Male’ area has increased by two percent – the positivity rate in inhabited islands outside of Male’ area has significantly dropped.

Maldives began its vaccination campaign in February last year. The country expanded the campaign to begin vaccinating children between 12 years and 17 years of age six months later, in August, and began administering the booster dose the same month.

398,597 people have received their first dose and 383,980 people have been fully vaccinated, while 159, 008 have received their booster dose.

84.80 percent of the eligible population have now completed two doses of the vaccine.
