Muezzin accused of engaging in homosexuality, case under investigation

Islamic Ministry has commenced efforts to suspend a muezzin working at mosque in Hulhumale’ following allegations of engaging in group sex with men, including Bangladeshi sex worker Alamgiri.

The suspected muezzin has been identified as Ahmed Rasheed. He previously worked a muezzin in a mosque in Galholhu – now working at a mosque in Hulhumale’. Rasheed who also worked as a teacher previously have been serving a muezzin for many years as of present.

Islamic Ministry’s Permanent Secretary (PS) Ahmed Adheel told Sun on Monday that the Ministry began investigating the case after it was brought to the Ministry’s attention this week. Noting that advise has been sought from the Civil Service Commission (CSC) regarding suspending Rasheed – Adheel said that a decision would be taken on the matter today.

“CSC has instructed to take a decision based on their advice. Therewith, we have requested the same,” he had said.

Adheel said that Rasheed was currently on leave – adding that he would not be carrying out his duty as a muezzin today even.

Meanwhile, Islamic Ministry confirmed earlier today the termination of Senior Executive Director at the National Centre for the Holy Quran Ibrahim Rafiu following the leak of a video which allegedly shows him engaging in homosexual relations.

Rafiu is an activist of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He recites Quran at many MDP events to commemorate the beginning with blessings.

A string of videos of men engaging in sexual relations with Alamgiri has been leaked from June onwards. 

The police have previously stated that cases pertaining to homosexuality is being investigated as serious matters.

In this regard, prominent lawyer and Parliament Speaker’s Mohamed Nasheed’s younger brother Nazim Sattar, a police officer working in the Drug Enforcement Department, Abdul Rahman Rafeeu and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed) have also been arrested for engaging in sexual relations with Alamgiri.

Education Ministry, on Friday, confirmed that some male teachers have been suspended over engaging in sexual relations with Alamgiri.

Home Ministry has also confirmed the suspension of an employee over suspicions of engaging in homosexual relations.

An employee working at People’s Majlis and two from Maldives Customs have also been suspended over suspicions of engaging in homosexual relations. However, it is unclear whether their cases relate to Alamgiri’s.

Sun has learned that over 100 people engaged in homosexual relations with Alamgiri.
