Magistrate suspended for reporting to work at a court other than one appointed to

Members of the Judicial Service Commission.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC), on Thursday, revealed their decision to suspend a magistrate for reporting to work at a court other than the one appointed to.

In a statement released earlier today. JSC said that B. Goidhoo Chief Magistrate Ahmed Nishan who was instructed to report work to the court, he had reported to work at B. Fulhadhoo Magistrate Court instead, which is also under his oversight.

JSC said documents and Chief Magistrate Nishan’s admission proves misconduct.

As per JSC’s regulations, magistrates must report to work to the court he or she is appointed to, and must only report to overseeing courts to hear cases.

Concluding that Chief Magistrate Nishan’s actions violated the Commission’s regulations on reporting to work at courts – JSC has decided to suspend him for 14 days, without pay and allowances.

JSC has previously investigated Chief Magistrate Nishan for misconduct. The case back then involved Chief Magistrate Nishan’s failure to recuse himself from a case submitted to B. Goidhoo Magistrate Court which involved a respondent with business links to Nishan, and hearing the case.
