Road Development Corporation (RDC) has resumed practical works in the project to develop Ameenee Magu – one of the main roads of the Maldivian capital.

The work on the project halted two weeks back due to delay in supply of equipment needed for upgrades by the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

RDC has closed the Ameenee Magu from the Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu to Kalaafaanu School for the work.

State Minister for Planning Akram Kamaluddin told Sun the project was paused for two weeks to get all the equipment they needed.

“We cannot keep the road closed forever, can we? We closed the road for two weeks to gather the equipment we need for road development,” he said.

Practical works on the project to develop Ameenee Magu began on August 30. A section of the road – one of the capital’s busiest - has remained closed since then. RDC previously said that it had completed all work on the section of the road, except for laying the asphalt.

The 1.7-kilometer Ameenee Magu is set to be redeveloped with asphalt, a modern storm drain system, and street lights.

The project had originally been contracted to Male’ City Council for MVR 39 million, but was later contracted to RDC for over double the cost – MVR 84 million.

  • Installation of braille blocks for visually impaired pedestrians
  • Wheelchair access
  • Installation of streetlights on both sides of the road
  • Installation of speed bumps
  • Installation of sign boards and bus stops
  • Installation of tree pots
  • Construction of cable trays on both sides of the road to install cables
  • Construction of special junctions for HV cables
