K. Kudagiri, the picnic island developed for residents in Male’ area, is scheduled to open in January.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said that a specific date has yet to be finalized although the decision to open Kudagiri in January has been taken.

Kudagiri was developed by HDC – in collaboration with four other state-owned companies’ Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), FENAKA Corporation, State Electric Corporation (STELCO), and Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

At the completion of the picnic island – HDC states that all services required by picnic goers will be available at the island including huts, bathrooms, a mosque, and sports facilities.

Kudagiri which was developed as a picnic island for residents in Male’ area was initially supposed to be inaugurated on Independence Day this year. However, the plan had been unsuccessful over incompletion of all works on the island.

The development of a picnic island for residents of Male’ area is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Delays in opening the island for public use over various reasons have garnered criticism from the public.
