Maldives National Party (MNP), on Friday night, presented its presidential ticket for the upcoming presidential elections to the party’s candidate and leader, Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim.

Nazim was presented the presidential ticket during a special ceremony held for the purpose at Artificial Beach area. This was followed by the launch of his presidential campaign. The slogan of his campaign is ‘Ujaalaa Zamaan’.

The official song which will be used in the campaign was also unveiled during the ceremony.

Only Nazim had filed his candidacy for MNP’s presidential primary. As per the party’s constitution, no voting is required if there is only one candidate.

As political parties prepare for the presidential election slated for September 9th – candidates that have secured the presidential ticket from their respective parties are;

  • Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom – Opposition PPM-PNC coalition
  • Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim
  • President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih – MDP

Candidates who have announced their intention to contest independently include former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawar and former Home Minister Umar Naseer.

Yameen, however, is presently serving an 11-year prison sentence after being found guilty of money laundering and bribery. Therewith, whether he can contest the election is questionable. His conviction will need to be overturned by a higher court to qualify as a presidential candidate.
