22 islands to receive MVR 7.5M in waste management equipment

Sri Lanka’s SAW Engineering has been contracted by the Environment Ministry to supply waste management equipment to 22 islands in the Maldives.

The contract was signed by Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and SAW Engineering’s director Bandula Jayarathne on Tuesday.

The MVR 7.5 million project is run under the Environment Ministry’s Maldives Clean Environment Project – run with grant assistance from the World Bank.

Under the project, SAW Engineering with supply waste management equipment to 22 islands in five atolls; M. Atoll, F. Atoll, Dh. Atoll, Th. Atoll, and L. Atoll.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Shauna said waste management issues facing Maldivian islands require urgent action.

She said the project signed Tuesday will help alleviate the challenges facing some of the islands.

The equipment that will be supplied through the project includes multi-purpose mini balers, single-feed glass bottle crushers, dustbins, PPE kits, and other equipment.

SAW Engineering is required to supply the equipment within the next four months.
