Ahmed Ghalib, who left the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) earlier this month citing “lack of sufficient room” to remain with the party, has joined the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

He signed for MDP on Monday.

In a tweet announcing the signing, Ghalib said he joined MDP with a large number of members of his family and members of the PPM from his home island, HA. Vashafaru.

In his tweet, Ghalib announced his support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who he said had “proved through words and action” that he was a true leader.

He said President Solih deserved a second term in office.

Prior to leaving PPM, he had served as president of the HA. Kelaa district and a member of the party’s senate.
