Maldivian Vice President Faisal Naseem has departed for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the holy hajj pilgrimage.

Faisal, who was appointed as the Amir al-Hajj this year, left for Makkah on Thursday night.

Faisal was appointed as Ami al-Hajj by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih earlier this month. As such, he has been charged with ensuring the smooth organization and management of the pilgrimage, as well as their welfare and safety of the pilgrims.

Maldives received a quota of 1,000 pilgrims for this year’s hajj pilgrimage. In addition to Maldives Hajj Corporation, three private companies received 90 spots each to take pilgrims on hajj.

President’s Office said the government accords high priority to the secure and smooth conduct of the hajj pilgrimage, and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims.
