Opposition coalition comprising of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) met with Jumhoory Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim on Tuesday at the instructions of their jailed leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

The meeting was attended by PNC’s leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) and Faresmaathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef on behalf of the opposition coalition.

Qasim was accompanied by his advisor, former Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

A photo of the meeting has been shared on social media by PPM.

PPM said the meeting pertained to discussions regarding pertinent issues in the Maldives at present. They did not disclose any further details.

Opposition coalition is presently working alongside ‘The Democrats’ the new political party spearheaded by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed in a reported attempt to end the incumbent Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s administration. However, the coalition repeatedly has stated they would back no candidate apart from Yameen for the presidential elections.

While Nasheed has announced his intention to sign for The Democrats – speaking at the inaugural congress of the party, Nasheed has proposed that he and Yameen both refrain from contesting the elections, to work together instead of engaging in an electoral contest.

Supporters of Nasheed previously held discussions with Qasim and JP as well. However, JP decided to independently contest the elections, or through a coalition led by the party. The party’s presidential ticket has been presented to Qasim.
