Maldives will elect six additional MPs next year

Members will be elected to six additional electoral districts during the parliamentary elections next year, states the Elections Commission (EC).

In a tweet, EC’s vice chairman Ismail Habeeb said the commission passed changes to electoral districts in accordance with Article 8 of the Act of Determination of Electoral Districts of the Parliament on Tuesday.

Habeeb said that six seats will be added to the Parliament next year; two seats for Male’ City, and one seat each to Addu City, South R. Atoll, Male’ Atoll, and GA. Atoll.

He said the commission will release details of registered populations of each of the districts soon.

According to Article 71 of the Constitution, an additional MP must be elected for each additional 5,000 registered residents of electoral districts.

The Parliament is currently composed of 87 MPs, with the two new seats added in 2019. With the six additional seats, the next parliamentary assembly will have 93 MPs.
