Magistrate Ali Adam’s suspension extended

HDh. Atoll's chief magistrate Ali Adam.

The suspension of HDh. Atoll’s chief magistrate Ali Adam – accused of calling and harassing a woman who filed a divorce petition with the court – has been extended indefinitely.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) opened an investigation against Ali Adam following the allegation he repeatedly called and texted one of the petitioners of a divorce petition submitted to the Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court.

JSC decided in an emergency meeting on May 25 to suspend Ali Adam until the commission makes a decision in the case.

In a statement on Sunday, JSC said that it decided on July 12 to extend Ali Adam’s suspension.

The commission said it made the decision based on the statement Ali Adam provided to the commission, the nature of the allegation against him, and the information collected in the case.

A few days before Ali Adam was suspended, the police arrested two people for threatening to kill him.

The suspects, identified as a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old, reportedly made the threat after confronting him at the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital on May 22.

However, it is unclear if the two cases are related.
