Maldives to grant license Elon Musk's Starlink today

One of the world's richest individuals, Elon Musk’s Starlink project has been approved by the Maldives for the provision of its services in the island nation. 

A special ceremony to commemorate the occasion is scheduled to be held at the National Centre for Information Technology this evening 

Discussions to give approval for the company to provide service in Maldives have been ongoing for some time. Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology states discussions were held on the matter February.

Other Internet service providers have reiterated that Maldives’ approval of Starlink will not affect their profits.

Speaking at the 2022 Annual General Meeting, Ooredoo's Chairperson Fatima Sultan Al Kuwairi said the company has taken various steps to maintain its profits. 

Starlink provides Internet services by launching more than 1700 satellites into lower Earth orbit. The service has now expanded to all continents. Maldives will be the first country in South Asia to receive the service.
