Observer, candidate rep suspended for harassing international observers

Elections Commission (EC) has penalized an observer from a political party and a representative of a candidate for harassing some of the international observers during the first round of voting in the 2023 presidential election.

EC’s chairman Ismail Habeeb said the decision was made by the commission during its meeting on Wednesday.

As such, the two individuals have been suspended from working as n observer, monitor, representative or electoral officials in the second round of voting scheduled for September 30, and in the next two national elections.

Habeeb said the commission will allow the party to replace the penalized officials with two others.

The commission did not specify which political party the two belonged to, or where the incident took place.
