An explosion took place at the Kulhudhuffushi Airport on Thursday, leaving four people injured.

The police said the explosion took place while airport workers were refilling a cylinder used for fire safety exercises.

Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital’s spokesperson Mohamed Moosa said four people were brought in with injuries at around 11:13 am Thursday.

They were identified as three men and one woman.

One of the men was hospitalized with serious injuries, while the other three sustained minor injuries.

“I am unable to detail the injuries at this time, but the patient sustained serious injuries,” said Moosa, when asked about the hospitalized patient.

Mohamed Rizvi, the managing director of Regional Airports – which runs the Kulhudhuffushi Airport – said the workers had been testing the pressure of some equipment when the explosion took place.

“They were running the test and it burst due to overpressure,” he said.

He said the incident hasn’t resulted in any disruption to the airport’s services.
