The family of the 37-year-old male victim who was critically injured following the explosion of a cylinder at Kulhudhuffushi Airport on Thursday states they are working on taking him abroad for further treatment.

Abdulla Mohamed, who spoke to Sun on behalf of Mohamed Ahmed’s family, said he was presently being treated at ADK Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He detailed that Mohamed Ahmed was transferred to Male’ after he underwent a surgery at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.

Abdulla Mohamed said his blood pressure was critically low when brought to ADK Hospital, which is now improving.

He underscored that Mohamed Ahmed was due to undergo another surgery on his hand, which can only be carried out 48 hours after Thursday’s surgery.

“Will take him abroad after that surgery. Had initially decided to go to India tomorrow. But at the advice of the doctors, have decided to take him abroad for further treatment after this surgery,” he said.

Abdulla Mohamed said Mohamed Ahmed sustained serious injuries to his hand in the explosion – the details of which can only identified after the second surgery.

Abdulla Mohamed also noted the assistance and support received from co-workers working alongside Mohamed Ahmed at the airport at this difficult time.

The police said the explosion reported at approximately 11:45am on Thursday took place while airport workers were refilling a cylinder used for fire safety exercises.
