Ali Nashath was appointed as a member of the Elections Commission (EC) on Thursday, a day after he received long delayed parliamentary approval.

He was presented with his letter of appointment by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in a ceremony at the President’s Office on Thursday morning.

His oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.

Nashath’s last term at the EC had expired in July, two months after President Solih requested parliamentary approval to appoint him for an additional term.

However, the Parliament was at a deadlock at the time, and went to recess on June 22, before reviewing the nomination.

This led to the EC being forced to hold the presidential election in September with one commissioner less.

The Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee approved Nashath for a new term as a member of the EC on October 10.

The  Parliament approved Nashath’s appointment with a majority vote of 42-9 on Wednesday.

Nashath was originally appointed as a member of the EC on July 25, 2018, prior to which he served as a director at the commission.
