President establishes council to diversify Maldives’ tourism sector

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has established the Visitor Economy Council – aimed at diversifying the Maldivian tourism sector.

The council will be headed by the president himself.

In a press conference on Sunday, Undersecretary for Public Policy at the President’s Office, Mohamed Firuzul Abdul Khaleel noted that tourism in the pillar of the Maldivian economy, and that the president has promised to give high priority to the tourism sector.

Firuzul said the newly established council will work to expand and elevate the Maldivian tourism sector.

“The purpose is to do the work needed to diversify the tourism sector. Today, the tourism sector is dependent on leisure tourism. The council will work to expand the tourism sector to medical tourism, education tourism, transport tourism, and other types of tourism,” he said.

Firuzul said the council will focus on developing, expanding, and taking the Maldivian tourism sector to new heights.

He added that the Economic Council and the Social Council will continue to function. The Social Council will be headed by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, while the Economic Council will be headed by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed.
