The advice of the Parliament’s Committee on Member’s Privileges and Ethics has been sought with respect to fining Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir by MVR 5,100 for damaging a microphone at the parliament.

After opening Tuesday’s sitting, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam said MP Jabir, at Monday’s sitting, broke a microphone installed at his table on the parliament floor.

He stressed that the microphone needs to be replaced due to the damage.

“The parliament secretariate has informed that MVR 5,100 will be incurred to replace the microphone,” he added.

Citing that the responsibilities of the Committee on Member’s Privileges and Ethics included investigating members for suspected of violating disciplinary standards or violating the laws and regulations and make recommendations to the parliament speaker on penalizing the member – Speaker Aslam said the committee’s advice has been sought with respect MP Jabir’s case.

Speaker Aslam also urged all members to refrain from committing such violations.

At Monday’s sitting, MP Jabir’s began shouting as Milandhoo MP Ali Riza, an MDP member, began speaking, leading to the order of the parliament being disrupted.

Subsequently, the parliament chair named MP Jabir, instructing him to remove himself from the floor.

Members have previously been fined for damaging properties of the parliament.
