Youth dead after contracting H1N1, three more on ventilator support

Internal medicine specialist Dr. Mohamed Ali, on Sunday, said a youth has passed away after contracting H1N1 – a type of influenza A virus – in the past 30 days, while three additional youths are on ventilator support.  

In a post on X, Dr. Mohamed Ali said H1N1 has been circulating in the Maldives over the past few weeks.

Speaking with Sun regarding the matter, Dr. Mohamed Ali identified the deceased as a 30-year-old Maldivian, adding that the three youths were being treated on ventilator support after developing pneumonia.

However, he stressed that it is unlikely for the situation to escalate into a pandemic.

Dr. Mohamed Ali detailed symptoms of H1N1 as symptoms similar to that of a cold.

“In such a case, it the safest to remain at home. If showcasing symptoms, it is advisable to use a mask or remain at home till a full recovery,” he said.

Dr. Mohamed Ali said people with the virus are likely to spread the virus about two days before symptoms show up, while there is still a high chance of spreading the virus after showcasing symptoms. 

As per the doctor, the disease is spread as a lower percentage of people are vaccinated against the virus. Therefore, he urged the public to get influenza vaccination as soon as possible.

He also expressed hope for season vaccines to be covered under Aasandha.

Maldives is presently experiencing rainy weather as a result of which the spread of mosquito-borne diseases has increased. Henceforth, health authorities have continuously urged the public to exercise caution.
