Health Ministry says that it has been alerted by the local council to cases of a neurological disease popping up in K. Kaashidhoo, and that it was researching the cases.

Kaashidhoo councilwoman Fazna Hussain told Sun on Thursday that the island has recorded cases of the disease in the past, but that the cases had increased, recently.

She said that teams from the Health Ministry have visited the island twice to investigate it.

The Health Ministry held a meeting with officials from Aasandha, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), and the Maldives National University (MNU) to discuss conducting research on the disease, last week.

Several families in Kaashidhoo have been affected by the disease, with victims losing muscle control in their arms and legs, and some unable to move around unassisted.

The island’s health center was not immediately available for comment regarding the cases.

The council said that the cases were of deep concern to the local community, and that the Health Ministry was providing its full cooperation in researching the disease.
