An emergency motion has been submitted to the parliament on Wednesday calling to issue flats to recipients under ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme whose applications the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) did not find any issues with at the earliest possible.

ACC, in a press briefing on Monday, said 59.6 percent of the people who were listed as recipients of flats under the former administration’s ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme are ineligible to receive flats under the scheme.

The corruption watchdog previously ordered the suspension of the issuance of flats under the scheme, following complaints of irregularities. The prolonged investigation sparked protests from recipients of the flats. However, the suspension was lifted by ACC on Thursday, which instructed the Housing Ministry to abide by certain rules while issuing the flats.

The emergency motion was submitted by North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla, calling on the government to issue the flats to recipients from Male’ area at the earliest possible.

Presenting her motion, Eva said while housing still remains a pressing issue that remains unresolved, the publication of the permanent list of recipients of 4,000 flats developed under the former administration’s housing policy had increased the hope of a prosperous life for many families.

She stressed that the delays in the issuance of flats over various reasons continue to cause losses to many such families.

“There are many families where all members live in small spaces,” she added.

Therewith, she called on the government to issue flats to recipients under ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme whose applications ACC did not find any issues with, without any further delays.

The publication of the list of the recipients of 4,000 flats developed by Fahi Dhiri Ulhun Corporation (FDC) in Hulhumale’ triggered protests from the public over the point allocation. A total of 325 complaints were submitted to ACC over the list.

As per ACC, there were applicants on the permanent list who had provided false information to be deemed eligible for the flats. The commission said it is the government that will make a decision on the next course of action.
