President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has vowed that his administration will make the causeway linking Thaa Atoll islands Kinbidhoo and Veymandoo a reality; an electoral pledge of the former administration that remained unfulfilled at the expiration of its term.

Linking Kinbidhoo and Veymandoo via a causeway is an electoral pledge of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. At the conclusion of his five-year term, no work on the project had been commenced, and no progress had been achieved.

Speaking to residents of Kinbidhoo on Thursday as part of his ongoing tour of Thaa Atoll – President Muizzu cited the most pertinent concern raised by the council during his meeting as the non-development of the causeway.

He emphasized the importance of islands being linked to each other through easy means of transportation.

On this note, he said developed countries only managed to attain that stature by improving their transportation system first.

“The most important thing for the residents of this island is to link the island with Veymandoo. I assure that this will surely be achieved,” he said. The president assured to develop causeways connecting not only Kinbindhoo and Veymandoo, but also Madifushi and Dhiyamigili.

Speaking further, he underscored economic growth as a top priority, with initiatives aimed at boosting income and development island-wide.

Former housing minister Mohamed Aslam cited the obstruction to building the causeway as the existence of ‘Elaa’ an uninhabited island in the planned path for the causeway. The island has been previously allocated for resort development. The issue was resolved by taking back the decision to develop a resort on the island.
