Zakat Fund to sponsor bone marrow transplants for 10 thalassemia patients each year

The Zakat Fund is set to sponsor bone marrow transplants for 10 thalassemia patients each year.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the initiative was signed between the Islamic Ministry and Health Ministry on Wednesday in a ceremony held at the Islamic Center.

The agreement was signed by State Minister for Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shujau Abdul Hakeem and State Minister for Health Aminath Shiruna.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shujau said the MoU covers sponsorship of bone barrow transplants for 10 thalassemia patients each year, for the next five years.

According to Shujau, the financial assistance will be capped at MVR 1 million per patient.

“This aid will be capped at MVR 1 million per patient. Therefore, MVR 50 million will be spent on 50 patients over the course of five years,” he said.

In 2023, the state sponsored bone marrow transplants for five thalassemia patients.
