Over 200 vehicles towed in one week

Maldives Police Service has towed over 200 illegally parked vehicles in the span of a week.

As per information shared by the Police on X, they carried out towing of illegally parked vehicles on all days except on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Police towed 40 vehicles on Wednesday night and 48 vehicles on Thursday night of last week. Meanwhile, 41, 60 and 46 vehicles were towed on the nights of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week respectively.

According to the Police, the vehicles towed were parked in a manner that obstructs movement in school zones and major roads in Male’ City in addition to roads most frequented by people.

An earlier announcement by the Police that they would not be issuing stickers for parking violations without allocating space for parking prompted an increase in illegal parking. In this regard, parked cars filled up both sides of roads. Motorcycles were parked on numerous smaller roads in a manner that posed difficulties for people using the roads. Vehicles also filled up the few vacant land plots in Male’ City such as Usfasgandu.

Henceforth, Police, on March 3rd, announced they would recommence enforcing action for parking violations.

They recommenced enforcing action for parking violations on March 5th.

Police, in light of illegal parking of vehicles that obstruct other vehicles and pedestrians using the roads, public transport and emergency vehicles, have strongly urged drivers to adhere to the stipulated regulations.
