The Local Government Ministry has publicized the standard for selection of islands for a project to build new council offices in 50 islands – an initiative announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu last month.

In a visit to HDh. Makunudhoo in February, President Muizzu said that during his tour of islands, he found that many of the councils were run out of buildings in a severe state of disrepair.

President Muizzu said that he would launch a big project to construct council offices this year. He said that because the project isn’t set in this year’s budget, it will be run based on investor financing model.

On Wednesday, the Local Government Ministry released standards and point criteria for selection of 50 councils for construction under contract finance policy.

20 points each are allocated for the size of the population, the current state of the building, and the resources. And 10 points each are allocated for work space for councilors, admin staff, and women’s development committee.

Councils that have received the Local Government Authority (LGA)’s Kangathi Awards will receive an additional 10 points.

The Local Government Ministry has invited feedback for the standard by 01:00 pm on March 28.
